Artists of renown from our area include:
Harold Gosney was a student at the Grimsby College of Art from 1954 and then studied at the Slade School where he was awarded the prestigious prize for drawing. In 1960 he returned to teach at the Grimsby School of Art. He now concentrates on sculpture working from his York studio. Works include two life-size horse and rider sculptures and reliefs on Grimsby’s Main Library and other buildings in the town. His work is currently on display in the cathedrals of York, Ripon and Chester.
DAVID TARTTELIN (b.1929)
His paintings have been displayed all over the world. Works include “South Quay No 3 Fish Dock, Grimsby” and “The Riverhead in Grimsby” (both on display at the Grimsby Heritage Centre) and a triptych of his friend and Hollywood actor John Hurt (also a local boy). When he was 80 years old, he had an exhibition in Grimsby showing many examples of his work over 60 years.
ERNEST WORRALL (1898-1972)
He moved to Grimsby from London in 1932 and worked as a teacher at Wintringham School. He was commissioned by Grimsby Borough Council to record the impact of World War 11 on the town. He created a series of over 20 paintings depicting a range of scenes in Grimsby. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and 4 of his paintings hang in the Imperial War Museum.
JOHN MALTBY (b 1936)
He was born in Cleethorpes. His ceramics are widely represented in a number of public collections, including the V and A in London, Edinburgh, Aberystwyth, Belfast, Exeter, Leicester and Faenza in Italy and Hamburg in Germany. He has exhibited widely in the UK, Europe and USA.
